MUSEUM OF SINAN THE ARCHITECT

Sinan...

We begin to understand by breaking into pieces.

By breaking down the whole into its understandable parts and reassembling them under the watchful eye of the mind, we obtain a synthesis and an inference. However, during this dismantling and re-establishment process, some important essences are lost and the new meaning that emerges may stay away from the subject we are trying to understand, becoming shallow. We can divide a plane into parts to understand the act of flying, but we cannot understand that we will get a flying object by looking at these parts such as the engine, screw, etc. All of them; when together, can turn into something completely different.

This may be the most dangerous part of thinking about Sinan; the more we analyze and try to understand, the further we move away from it.

An effort to establish an identity of attitude with Sinan

We are building a museum for Sinan on a layered earth crust which is rich in geology, culture and history, in an ethnic geography, with the lookout of the unique Erciyes Mountain. We aimed to establish an identity of attitude without getting lost in this richness and without worrying about becoming Sinan, by getting rid of a dangerous “world of images”.

We created the design by scraping it with our hands. We think that the feeling of touching and producing by using our hands is a timeless conjunction. In this context, we start by taking the support of all the craftsmen who have existed in these lands by using their hands. What we’re doing is designing a raised earth crust. A crust of earth that bears the traces of the soil of the place where it is located, and can even provide its shape in this way... This crust is a park. Recognizing that we are contextually part of an urban park, we create a ‘park’ within a uniform park. This elevated earth crust defines a dramatic intermediate space between the ground and the sky, offering an opportunity to experience Mount Erciyes and the rest of the park from a different level. It returns the space it occupies on the ground into a quality landscape on its roof for public use.

Under the raised earth crust is a completely different world. Here we are immersed in a sequence of different surfaces created by the different construction methods of the usual local materials. This is a rich world where the outdoor material continues to diversify in the interior, the feeling under your feet is kept alive at all times, a world different from the previous one is established with different light conditions every hour of the day, and there is constant human movement in and on top of it.

We understand Sinan as an attitude. We consciously avoid any imaginative analysis and inference. Without ever mentioning Sinan, we took the trouble of establishing a place for Sinan with an identity of attitude.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY

Location is a very important input for this project. This land is very fertile in terms of creativity. 20 km northeast of the project area, there is a man born in Ağırnas village, a village in Koramaz Valley, which is famous for its unique stonemasonry, who grew up with this culture and for whom we are now trying to design a museum. This is why it is quite meaningful that this structure is uniquely derived from the ground.

We started by creating rich sections of the earth crust and space in our minds. As the defining part of that space on the ceiling of each space, we preferred to use our hands to obtain a  rich chain of sections, which correspond to a surface movement and change constantly in three dimensions.

The rough surface of the model after scraping provided an important similarity with this idea of the earth crust that we extracted from the soil. After making sure that we captured the light - shadow - human and scale relations that we had in our minds in the 1/200 scale model, we produced a 180 degree cloud model. By extracting the contours of the roof surface topography with the three-dimensional model we obtained, we actually had a filling map in hand that will be given to the site in the future construction stage. The fact that the design and the construction phase are in high contact establishes a valuable identity with the subject of the competition.

“MUSEUM” AS A CIRCULATION AREA
MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS

The most important schematic decision we made is to design the circulation line of the building itself as a museum-exhibition route... and to derive all the curatorial work to be done about Sinan in the spaces inside the column rooms following this route line. Thanks to this scheme, spaces such as the multi-purpose hall, workshops, classrooms, library, cafeteria, which are added to the exhibition route, enrich the exhibition inventory by being included in the exhibition setup as spatial exhibition objects with the floor material, the form of the roof and the spiritual quality of the skylight, even when they are not used. We are transforming the Exhibition Area from being a “hall” into a backbone that feeds the entire building.

We are creating a route designed integrated with the architecture, connecting with the ceiling, and giving each step a different experience and a different cross-section. On this experience route, we place all kinds of interactive and educational exhibition methods required by the new century, integrated with the natural shell and architecture of the building.

We address the issue of sustainability in a multi-layered way, contextually, spatially, intellectually, historically, economically and administratively. We return the area we cover as a building trace to the citizens with the landscape we set up on the roof in an easily accessible way.

Another issue is material. Our understanding here is not to waste... We use the vegetal soil, coarse gravel, sandy ground, andazites, pebbles, large and small rock blocks of volcanic origin and basalt units that were removed while excavating the project area, over and over as much as we can.

Administratively, a structure that has visitors at all hours of the day and hosts collective works and is always alive has been designed. The main circulation line around the building was designed as the exhibition line itself and the spaces were added to the setup as transformable parts of this line. Thanks to the reconfiguration of the required program, a situation was created that optimizes both the operating cost and the initial investment cost in terms of sustainability.

In terms of self-sufficiency, the heating-cooling need of the building is provided by a ground source heat pump, and it is planned to obtain the energy it will need from the ground. At the same time, the energy efficiency of the ground source heat pump system is quite high. They are the systems with low CO2 emissions and the lowest total environmental costs. In addition, the rain water collection system will be applied from an area of approximately 4000 square meters of the roof structure, and the water need of the building and its surroundings will be met to a certain extent.

The collected rain water will be recycled by using it in WC, urinals and environmental green area irrigation. The bottom of the inner garden was left as natural soil and the ground water and the underground life was protected. With the interior garden and roof skylights, the building provides the required level of illumination within comfortable limits.
